used to be precious
commodities in the 17th
Century that the Dutch and the
British travelled
half way across the world to
monopolise regions which grew
spices.For example, a cupful
of cloves could be exchanged
for a cupful of gold and these
spices would be kept in
cupboards with lock and
key.Spices are used to add
flavour to your cooking and we
take a look at how our
different societies use
spicesin their culinary
specialities.First, we would
walk with you through the
spice gardens in Fort
Canning.Followed by a visit to
Peranakan exhibit in the
National Museum. In the old
days, a good prspective
daughter-in-law would be
chosen by the way she pounds
the spices using mortar and
pestle.Next, we take the
coachto Little India.See how
curries are milled using old
fashion grinders.You can also
sample some Indian
delicacies.Next, we are off to
the wet market of Geylang
Serai.It's the focal point of
our Malay community to buy the
freshest groceries which is

starts with visit to Arab St
& Kampung Glam.Embrodered
materials, semi precious
stones, basketwares,
accessories for a pilgrimage,
natural alcohol free perfumes
abound in this area. Kampong
Glam got its name from the
Glam trees and its bark was
used by the Bugis and Malays
to repair their boats.Next, we
visit the Sultan Mosque.It was
built in 1928 with
contributions of many Muslims
in the community which
included the rim of glass
bottom bases which can be seen
at the edge of the dome.We
would also make a short stop
at another national monument,
Hajjah Fatimah Mosque or
otherwise known affectionately
as the Leaning Mosque Of
Singapore. We would drive past
Madrasah Wak Tanjong.Madrasahs
are similar to normal schools
but their focus is more to
religious aspect in 3 main
languages - English,Malay and
Arabic. Proceed to Geylang
Serai and we shall visit the
Malay Village.Highlight
includes a brief insight of
Malay Culture and return to
the past with a walk through a
typical Malay Kampong. We
would also catch a
"Genie" to relate us
interesting Malay folklore in
Lagenda Fantasi. Note the
interesting architecture of
the Malay Village.It resembles
typical Minangkabau houses.
Famous personalities in the
Malay community such as our
first president, the late Mr
Yuof Ishak and composer of our
national anthem, the late Mr
Zubir Said is of Minang
origin.
Next,
we shall walk through Geylang
Serai Market-the only market
